Tim Taranto of the Tigers is seen in action during the AFL Round 3 match between the Richmond Tigers and the Sydney Swans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Sunday March 31, 2024.

Richmond star midfielder Tim Taranto needs surgery for a broken wrist after suffering the injury during a harmless incident at Tigers training.

Reigning medalist Jack Dyer fell during Richmond’s main session at Punt Rd on Friday morning, ruling him out of Sunday’s match against West Coast.

Taranto will miss an extended period in possibly the biggest addition to the growing list of injuries facing first-year Tigers coach Adem Yze.

“We are incredibly disappointed for Tim that he will miss some football, but we know what a professional he is,” Richmond head of football performance Tim Livingstone said on Friday.

“He will stay fit and strong and come back as quickly as he can.

“It was an unfortunate incident right at the end of the (Friday) session.

“They’ll operate on him immediately and then we’ll see how everything is.”

Taranto, 26, had not missed a game since arriving at Richmond from Greater Western Sydney ahead of the 2023 season.

News of his injury came just hours after Richmond confirmed that fellow midfielder Jack Ross would miss up to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.
