In the summer of 1994, Chris Sutton was widely regarded as one of the most promising attacking talents in British football.
Last season, he scored 25 Premier League goals for Norwich in a season in which they also recorded a historic upset by knocking Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Cup.
As one of the most coveted properties available on the transfer market, many of the Premier League’s top clubs were tracking the striker, who was then just 21 years old.
It was an ambitious Blackburn side, managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish, who eventually secured his signature that summer, paying an English record fee of £5m to bring him to Ewood Park.
While her time in Lancashire would prove an immediate success, Sutton revealed to co-host Ian Ladyman on the latest episode of It’s all just beginning! that his arrival at the club occurred in somewhat less auspicious circumstances.
“I was arrested the night before I was due to move to Blackburn,” Sutton explained. “I got a bit emotional.”
