Kolkata: Following the Center’s decision to provide some relaxation during the third phase of the lock, liquor stores in West Bengal will be allowed to reopen only in “green” zones from Monday, an official said.

All liquor stores in the state had been closed since the start of the nationwide shutdown on March 25, imposed to stem the coronavirus outbreak.

The state government will not allow the liquor stores in the red zones to reopen and still not decide on those in the orange zones, sources said, as stated in the Center’s guidelines.

According to the state government, there are four “red”, eight “green” and 11 “orange” zones in West Bengal. The state capital, Kolkata, also falls under the red zone. Here is the full list.

A meeting of state government officials is scheduled for Monday on whether to reopen liquor stores in the orange zones, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the state government had levied a 30 percent sales tax on the MRP of the drink bottles in all categories.

The government had also instructed shops in green areas to strictly enforce social distance standards and also provide hand sanitizers to buyers.
