Detroit’s dream season ended in crushing disappointment on Saturday with a decisive playoff loss to the Washington Commanders.
Washington’s victory was led in part by a second straight sensational playoff performance from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. It was sparked by a swarming defense that forced five turnovers in the 45-31 victory. Four of those turnovers were committed by Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who fumbled on a sack and threw three interceptions, including an interception 6.
Goff’s performance drew swift criticism, with some blaming him for Detroit’s loss. Penei Sewell didn’t listen to him. Detroit’s All-Pro right tackle made his feelings clear in no uncertain terms after the game: Goff was not at fault.
Penei Sewell on people blaming Jared Goff for last night’s loss:
“It’s SHIT…it’s not like he’s the one alone.”

“It’s nonsense,” Sewell told reporters in the postgame locker room. “I just don’t understand how in a team sport people can blame one person. It’s not like he’s the one alone.
“I’ll never understand. But again, that’s not my world or what I pay attention to. But it’s nonsense.”
The loss was difficult to comprehend in Detroit after a 15-2 regular season that placed the Lions as the favorites to advance to the Super Bowl outside the NFC. After decades of largely losing football and never playing in a Super Bowl, Detroit finally had a team to feel good about.
That feel-good situation came to an abrupt end Saturday ahead of an offseason that could change the team’s trajectory. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn are expected to depart for head coaching opportunities, and a repeat of 2024 success is certainly no guarantee.
This was the best opportunity the Lions had and the result of the season was the same as always: less than the Super Bowl.
Questions about Goff will continue to arise throughout the offseason. At the moment, it has the support of one of the most prominent voices on the team.
