Lionel Messi is the star of a new mural in Buenos Aires less than a week after he won the World Cup with Argentina.

The Argentines managed to overtake France on penalties last Sunday to win their first World Cup in 36 years, and it wasn’t long before the moment was captured by artist Maximiliano Bagnasco.

Created in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, the mural shows Messi front and center lifting the trophy during post-match celebrations with goalkeeper Emi Martinez behind him.

Paulo Dybala and Rodrigo de Paul also appear in the impressive painting.

“It’s my way of saying thank you. It is also a gift for people. Football for the Argentine people is always fun and allows us to overcome difficult moments better,” said Bagnasco AS.

“We saw Argentina united with millions of people on the streets… We are world champions!”

Several other murals of Messi had been spotted in Argentina during the tournament.

Bagnasco said he started the mural shortly after the end of the final, where Messi scored two goals and later converted his penalty in the shootout.

And while France’s Kylian Mbappé – who scored a hat-trick in the final – finished with eight goals to beat Messi to the Golden Boot, it was Messi who was awarded the Ballon d’Or as the most outstanding player of the tournament.

The PSG playmaker scored seven goals and added three more throughout the tournament as he clinched the tournament that had previously eluded him.

Incredibly, he also scored at every stage of the tournament as Argentina recovered from a shock opening match loss to Saudi Arabia.

The result of the final spurned wild parties in the streets.

During the team’s victory parade, players had to be evacuated by helicopter as fans threw projectiles and attempted to jump into the team bus.

Four million people poured into the streets in the parade, which was expected to last about eight hours but was cut short.
