Lionel Messi becomes the first ever LaLiga player to score 20 and assist 20 or more goals in the same season after his share of Arturo Vidal’s winner in Barcelona’s win in Valladolid
Lionel Messi added another record to his incredible career on Saturday as he became the first player in La Liga history to score 20 and assist 20 goals or more in the same season.
The club’s all-time top scorer set Arturo Vidal to ease Barca’s nerves as the reigning champions scored a 15-minute opener that proved decisive for Real Valladolid.
Former teammate Thierry Henry is the only other player to reach Europe’s top five league milestones in the 21st century, scoring 24 and assisting 20 for Arsenal in the 2002/03 Premier League season.

The last player to provide 20 assists in La Liga also played for Barcelona, as former midfielder Xavi proved his creative brilliance during the 2008/09 campaign.
Xavi has recently been linked with a return to the club as manager during an inconclusive series of results under Quique Setien, who was only appointed in January.
Messi has wondered if Barca can win the Champions League under Setien’s tactics and is in a relatively poor goal score under the beleaguered coach.
Messi is now the first player to score 20 and assist 20 or more goals in one season in La Liga
Despite scoring his 700th goal last month in a 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid, the Argentinian striker has only found the net twice in eight games – and both came from the penalty spot.
The 33-year-old now hopes that Real Madrid, which is one point ahead of their arch rivals with a match in hand, will slip when the leaders travel to Granada tomorrow.
Messi has two games of the national season left to further expand the new record
