A blood-curdling video shows the moment when a ferocious lion in a zoo lunged at a five-year-old boy, but kept clawing at a glass plate.

The footage shows Evan Kennedy giggling in surprise as Jayendra the lion tries to get his claws on the cub at Edinburgh Zoo.

Filmed on May 28, the clip shows the 11-year-old Asiatic Lion watching Evan walk next to the glass window to the big cats’ enclosure.

The youngster, from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, leaps forward before bursting into laughter as members of his family scream and chuckle.

The king of the jungle’s huge paws scratch against the protective glass screen as he watches his prey.

Muddy paw prints are smeared across the screen as Jayendra continues pacing while keeping a close eye on Evan.

The female lion Roberta roams in the background as the incident unfolds.

Evan’s mother, Catherine Kennedy, shared the clip on social media yesterday, writing: “The lion at Edinburgh Zoo thought Evan was eating.”

Today mother of three Catherine spoke: ‘It was just before closing time, so we went back to the exit and saw the lions by the glass.

“He jumped against the glass, so I tried to get a picture of Evan with the lion behind him. Every time Evan moved, it followed him.

“We went to the zoo last Friday as it was Evan’s birthday on Thursday, May 27, so there were me, my husband, and his two big sisters Lily, 13, and Orla, 7.

“It was actually Lily who filmed it. It was his first time at the zoo. It was lovely, it got warm and we had a lovely day.’

She added: “He would have liked to see the pandas and penguins because they watched the zoo’s webcams, but he says his new favorite is the lion.”

Edinburgh Zoo is home to five Asiatic lions – Jayendra, Roberta, Mitaali, Keshari and Kushanu.

Jayendra was born in 2010 and moved from Bristol to the Scottish Zoo in 2012.

Roberta was born in 2013 and arrived in 2014 from a zoo in Germany.

In August 2019, Roberta gave birth to Mitali, Keshari and Kushanu.
