As awards season kicks into high gear, Apple has shared a first look at the Best Actress hopeful Enter Lily Gladstone Killers of the Flower Moon.
The clip pits Gladstone against Leonardo DiCaprio, playing recently returned war veteran Ernest Burkhart, who aggressively tries to woo Gladstone’s Mollie.
The Martin Scorsese-directed historical epic, based on David Grann’s novel of the same name, chronicles a series of murders of the Osage people following an oil boom and the subsequent FBI investigation into the murders, which became known as the Reign of Terror. Mollie and Ernest are at the center of the story, which follows their relationship as Mollie’s relatives fall victim to the murders.
“The revelation for many will be the wonderful Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle, the woman unlucky enough to marry gold-digger Ernest,” it said. The Hollywood Reporter review of the film at the Cannes Film Festival. “It takes a director often criticized for his lack of fully dimensional female characters not only to provide one, but to make her the film’s wounded heart.”
Before Cannes, DiCaprio said THR that “Lily has an amazing presence and power. She spent months studying Mollie Burkhart and her family, working extensively to understand the intricacies of this woman, her relationship with Ernest, and her legacy within the Osage community.
Killers of the Flower Moon releases on October 20 via Apple and Paramount, before heading to Apple’s streaming service.
