The musical features an original score by Sir Elton John, 77, who was also at the star-studded premiere.
Reflecting on why he decided to write the score for the musical, the musician said RadioTimes.com: ‘The film is a classic and has aged brilliantly and fashion and music go very well together, which is why there were so many scenes in the film that cried out for music. It was a no-brainer for me.
‘It’s fantastic to be able to write for this kind of musical because it’s not Shakespeare, it’s absolutely great fun.
“It has fantastic costumes, an incredible cast and brilliant choreography.”
While Sir Elton’s career as a musical theater composer is slightly less famous than his singing, he is responsible for some of the greatest musical theater scores in history.
The Lion King, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, earned him an Oscar, as did the original performance of Billy Elliot on the West End in 2005.
While it has yet to be confirmed that the film’s original cast will return for a sequel, the reported plot description hints that both Meryl Streep (Miranda Priestley) and Emily Blunt (Emily Charlton) would return, according to Variety.
The sequel’s story will follow Priestley and his career in the present day, as traditional magazine publishing is in decline.
