A pilot and his female passenger were seriously injured after their light aircraft crashed in the Outback of South Australia.

The vessel turned while the 56-year-old tried to land at William Creek Airport, 165 km east of Coober Pedy, just after 3 pm on Sunday, police say.

They were flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where they are being treated for multiple head, chest and leg injuries, but they are both in a stable condition.

The police issued an air exclusion zone on site until 9 a.m. on Monday.
