Lidia Thorpe has made the extraordinary claim that she swore allegiance to the Queen’s “hairs” rather than her “heirs” when she was sworn in as a senator more than two years ago.
Thorpe made headlines around the world when he shouted at King Charles and Queen Camilla during a parliamentary reception on Monday, accusing the king of “(committing) genocide against our people” and shouting “f*** the colony”.
Thorpe was asked by the ABC on Wednesday afternoon if she would then renounce her oath to “maintain true loyalty” to the monarchy, which she took when she was sworn in as a Greens senator in 2022.
He then made the extraordinary statement: “I swore allegiance to the Queen hairsif you listen close enough.
‘It was her hair, not her heirsto whom I was giving my loyalty, and now that they are no longer here, I don’t know what their situation is.
“I’m not going to quit my job, I’m not going to resign.”
Shocked host Greg Jennett responded by asking if that made his position in the Senate untenable.
‘What is the meaning of that mispronunciation? …Does this invalidate your assertion statement?
Mrs Thorpe said: “I am not an expert in colonial law… This country wants to swear allegiance to a king of another country whose ancestors have been responsible for massacres, so many massacres in our country…
‘Why, with my hand on my heart, would I kneel before an oppressor? A murderous thief’.
Senator Thorpe shouted at the king after a speech he gave in Parliament, which was also attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
‘You committed genocide against our people. Give us back our land,’ he said.
‘Give us what you stole from us. Our bones, Our skulls, our babies, our people. You destroyed our land. Give us a treaty. We want a treaty.’
