A former Channel 7 presenter is facing new assault charges after allegedly strangling a woman until she lost consciousness during a violent altercation.
Police allege Liam David Cox assaulted and strangled a woman at a home in Vaucluse, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, on the night of May 4.
The court previously heard he had been drinking champagne and espresso martinis at a charity fundraising event before a dispute with the woman turned violent.
The woman told police the 39-year-old man threw her to the ground, straddled her and proceeded to forcefully choke her until she passed out.
“He tried to kill me,” the court previously heard she told police.
Officers reportedly found the woman bleeding from her nose and coughing up blood when they arrived at the home.
She was hospitalized for injuries, which reportedly included red marks on her abdomen, shoulder and neck.
The court previously heard Cox told police he was defending himself after the pair clashed violently, but admitted he had not used reasonable force.
He has been charged with domestic violence offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation of a person without consent.
On Thursday, court documents revealed that police filed two additional charges against Cox earlier this month.
According to documents, he has now been charged with two counts of common assault against the same alleged victim.
Police allege the former TV presenter assaulted the woman in the Sydney area around the same time as the other alleged domestic violence offences.
He then allegedly assaulted the woman again within 24 hours while she was in Rozelle, according to police charges.
The former Channel Seven reporter was charged twice earlier this month.
On Thursday, a police prosecutor told Sydney’s Downing Central Court that most of the evidence against Cox had been handed over to his lawyer.
“There are still some pending issues,” he said.
He asked for a postponement to allow police to collect and serve the remaining items.
The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to handle the case in the future.
Magistrate Margaret Quinn adjourned the matter until August, along with a police violence order to restrict Cox’s interaction with his alleged victim.
Cox has yet to enter a plea regarding the charges against him.
During his journalistic career, he rubbed shoulders with sports stars such as Sam Burgess.
The court previously heard that the former TV presenter moved back in with his mother after being granted bail last month.
He was ordered to comply with strict bail conditions requiring him to refrain from contacting the woman, surrender his passport and report regularly to police.
The 39-year-old man is also banned from going near the Vaucluse home where the domestic violence offences allegedly occurred.
He worked as a journalist for 20 years, during which time he worked as a presenter for Canal Siete, Canal Diez and the radio station Triple M.
