ATSC 3.0 is the next major version of the television broadcast format. (Version 2.0 was intended as a backwards-compatible update that was eventually canceled in favor of the more important 3.0 update.) While ATSC 1.0 added digital technology and HD video, ATSC 3.0 is planned to be an IP (Internet Protocol) based system. It’s still a wireless system, but it’s based on the same protocols as most Internet technology, making it easy to watch TV broadcasts on modern connected devices. It will be a big change in the technology underlying our television systems and should greatly expand the capabilities of broadcast television.
