‘It was overwhelming’: Lewis Capaldi leaves a heroic teen speechless on the Jonathan Ross Show as he serenades her for saving a boy and her father

A brave teenager was left ‘speechless’ when she was sung to by Lewis Capaldi on Saturday night on the Jonathan Ross Show.

Saving the life of a boy and her father, Lucy Montgomery thought she’d won a tour of the ITV studios and would be taking part in a documentary about inspiring people.

However, the heroic 15-year-old was left shocked when she was taken to the hit ITV show where Lewis performed his new single for her.

The hitmaker, 26, also gave Lucy a gold envelope during the show, revealing that she had won a Daily Mirror Pride of Britain award.

Lewis said, “We’ve all heard how incredible you are, so you got this.”

With a grin from ear to ear, Lucy said, “I was shocked, it all happened so fast. I never expected to be nominated for an award for what I did.

“I didn’t expect Lewis to come out and sing to me, I just couldn’t believe it. It was overwhelming.’

In July 2021, Lucy was paddleboarding in the Charente River while on holiday in France, where she saw a Mathieu family friend, eight, drifting into deep, dangerous water.

The brave teenager, who was 14 at the time, accompanied her father Graham, 50, who cannot swim, to keep the boy calm.

The tide got strong and swept Mathieu away, prompting the young girl from Northern Ireland to swim into the strong waters and drag him to the shore, saving his life.

When she got the boy to safety, Lucy realized she “didn’t have time to be scared” because her father was now in danger and swam back to him and told him to turn on his back so he would float.

Her father Graham said, “Before Lucy intervened, I thought I was going to drown. Then Lucy was there, she was very calm and composed.’

She revealed that she only thought “to find a way to get him to safety,” but after that she was exhausted and had no energy to swim on her own.

Fortunately, Lucy spotted her paddleboard and climbed on it, which floated back to land with her on it.

Headteacher Graham said, “We are very proud of Lucy, absolutely. We are shocked that our incident has received the attention it has. She’s really great and very humble.’

Lucy’s mother Lynn, 48, said: ‘She was taken to the set of the Jonathan Ross Show, which she is watching – she told me she was excited enough to just sit on the couch where it was filmed.

‘Then Jonathan himself appeared and he was just so beautiful. He admitted he knew everything about her, and Lucy loved that.’

Jonathan said to the teenager, “While you’re here, you can do my job. Have you read the autocue?’
