Incredible the difference a competent defensive coordinator and a few extra pounds on the defensive line mean that no one will ever question Lincoln Riley’s offensive prowess, his tutelage of three Heisman Trophy winners a testament to that fact. However, Riley’s inability to field a competitive defense has been his Achilles’ heel. The Michigan and Penn State games will prove whether this Trojans team is a playoff contender or if Louisiana State’s win was just a mirage in the Las Vegas desert.

By Ben Bolch Coach Foster’s Question Relation The phrase “I just wanted to go for it” in relation to the punt on the opening series against Hawaii begs the question: Who is in charge? Does Eric Bieniemy make all the game management decisions, with the authority to override those of the head coach? And, whoever made that decision, why did he make it?
Quarterback Ethan Garbers has shown, as he did in the second half, that he should be fine. The more serious concerns are game management by the new coaching staff and an offensive line that can be overwhelmed by Big Ten defensive fronts. It could be a very long season.

Harry Frazee, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees 104 years ago. In the “Curse of the Bambino,” it took the Red Sox 86 years to win the World Series.
Last year Arte Moreno, owner of the Angels, I didn’t even try to match an offer to re-sign Shohei Ohtani, arguably the greatest player of our time. With the Angels’ only World Series win coming in 2002, the question is whether there will be a “Shohei Curse” and if we can expect 2088 to be the next time Anaheim wins a World Series.

Every Angels fan and/or ticket holder should feel that owner Arte Moreno does not care about them in the slightest. Why would Moreno sell his rights to the most exciting player in the Major Leagues, Shohei Ohtani, a two-way player and the new Babe Ruth? Moreno traded away the excitement of the fans for money. I hope he realizes what a stupid mistake he made. Hopefully fans and ticket holders will remind him of that. I’m sure the Dodgers will.

Sam Farmer is a seasoned football writer, so I’m not sure if he’s being provocative, delusional or just fanatical. but including the Rams as one of the seven teams —along with Kansas City, Philadelphia, Detroit, etc.—that could win the Super Bowl is absurd. Aaron Donald has retired, Matthew Stafford is a year older and recovering from a hamstring injury, the best linebacker has been traded, two receivers are already injured. Or maybe he’s just filling in for Bill Plaschke this week.
