Manchester United will listen to offers for Antony this summer as the Brazilian winger’s miserable career at Old Trafford continues to decline.

United may struggle to recoup even half of the £86m Antony cost Ajax 18 months ago, making him the second most expensive signing in the club’s history.

But it is a measure of disappointment with the 24-year-old’s form that United are prepared to cut their losses and sell him.

Antony has started just one of the last eight games (at Newport County in the FA Cup) and was named as a substitute again when United lost to Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Teenager Omari Forson was chosen ahead of him, and coach Erik ten Hag sent on three substitutes, including another young winger, Amad Diallo, before turning to Antony in the final minute of stoppage time.

Antony has played 20 games in the Premier League this season without contributing a single goal or assist to his team.

With the new co-owners of Ineos examining the cost and effectiveness of the United team following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.3bn investment, their figures are bleak.

Ten Hag returned to his former club Ajax to sign Antony in the summer of 2022 and it is understood that the Dutchman has not given up on the player, believing he still has the ability to turn his career around in England.

But Ten Hag admitted last month that Antony had been distracted by allegations of domestic abuse, which he strongly denies, which led to him being abandoned in Brazil in September and spending time in South America to clear his name.

After the Fulham defeat, the United manager was frank in his explanation for having played with Alejandro Garnacho, Forson and Diallo before their costly Brazilian failure.

“It had nothing to do with fitness,” Ten Hag said. “He is fit, but we have plenty of options on the right.”

“We have all seen Antony’s form and he has to take a step forward. I see it in training but Omari Forson, Amad Diallo and Garnacho also deserve to play.”
