leeds He had boss Daniel Farke to thank after keeping his unbeaten record for 2024 and his promotion momentum on track intact, with a late equalizer from super-sub Mateo Joseph last night.

Farke’s men had been ruthless winning 12 of their 13 league games this calendar year but looked set to suffer their first defeat since December at the hands of a resurgent Watford.

Vakoun Bayo and Emmanuel Dennis scored for the hosts after Crysencio Summerville’s excellent equalizer.

But Farke sent on 20-year-old Joseph and scored the equalizer a minute after coming on, to keep Leeds just one point behind leaders Ipswich and ahead of Leicester in a promotion fight that was coming down to the wire.

He was a disappointment for Hornets interim boss Tom Cleverley but has four points from two games since replacing Valerien Ismael and is making a compelling case to be given the job permanently.

Willy Gnonto’s absence through injury offered Dan James the chance to end one of the toughest weeks of his career on a high after the winger’s missed penalty cost his country a place at Euro 2024.

However, James was calm from the start and chances were few and far between until Bayo put Watford ahead in the 31st minute, volleying in the rebound after Illan Meslier leaped magnificently to deny Dennis.

Summerville provided Leeds’ response, curling brilliantly into the far corner after cutting in from the left side. Dennis restored the hosts’ lead with his own beauty. Mirroring Summerville’s equalizer, the Nigerian danced in from the right flank and fired past Meslier.

Summerville were a constant threat for Leeds and came close to another draw after the break.

But it was super substitute Joseph who found the equalizer, firing home from close range moments after being sent off.

Fellow substitute Jaidon Anthony almost made it 3-2 soon after, but Farke will have to settle for second place, at least until Easter Monday.
