Former Arsenal player Lee Dixon praised Man City goalscorer Cole Palmer during the Community Shield on Sunday.

The 21-year-old scored in the 77th minute as City took control of the Community Shield clash, but a late equalizer from Leandro Trossard saw Arsenal take the game to penalties, with the Gunners winning.

Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missed their spot kicks as Arsenal emerged victorious 4-1 in a penalty shootout.

Speaking to ITV during the clash, Dixon said he believes Pep Guardiola has a ready replacement for Riyad Mahrez in Palmer.

‘What a talent this guy is. Mahrez leaves, is there a chance for him? he said. He’s already had a chance, absolutely no chance for Ramsdale, he doubles it, absolutely brilliant.

‘Beautiful, beautiful opportunity and he takes it. He could be the winner. Partey thought he had it, used the defender’s body and just doubled over.

Speaking after the match, Palmer opened up about the loss, admitting that his team was upset about losing on penalties.

“Too close, gutted to concede at the last minute, that’s football and we get up and go again,” he said before discussing his goal.

“When I got the ball, Walker just said to catch it, Pep told me to go myself, when I went in I saw the far corner and luckily it went in.”

The 21-year-old has been linked with a loan release this summer and went on to discuss his future, outlining his goals for next season.

He said: ‘I have to see what the plan is for next season, see where I am playing and hopefully play as many games as possible.

“Hopefully we can win the treble again, but it will be a difficult task.” The guys have been very well trained and we look forward to doing it all over again.’
