Lee Daniels reluctantly commented on the ongoing Jussie Smollett situation during a performance on Good Day New York Wednesday morning.
The Empire maker was on the morning show to promote the new piece that he produced, Is not No Mo & # 39; when asked about Smollett.
& # 39; It is so painful that our soul has been cracked & # 39 ;, said Daniels.
& # 39; It's just too painful to talk about. & # 39;
Then, after a bit of poking and poking, he revealed that the future of Smollett would continue Empire is very much in the air.

Dynamic duo: Lee Daniels spoke about the Jussie Smollett scandal on Good Day New York and said he is concerned about the mental health of the actor when he is lying about an attack (Daniels and Smollett above in 2017)
Lyons: He revealed that Smollett may not be able to return to Empire for the sixth season because of his lawsuit with the city of Chicago (l to r, Bottom Row: Bryshere Gray as Hakeem Lyon, Jussie Smollett as Jamal Lyon, Trai Byers as Andre Lyon: Middle Row: Grace Gealey as Anika, Kaitlin Doubleday as Rhonda Lyon Back Row: Gabourey Sidibe as Becky, Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon, Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon and Ta & # 39; Rhonda Jones as Porsha)
Daniels was asked if the lawsuit filed against Smollett, along with the increased insurance premium now associated with the star, caused some difficulty in getting the actor back for the show's sixth season.
& # 39; It causes a dilemma & # 39 ;, Daniels admitted.
& # 39; And we are talking about that now. & # 39;
However, Daniels refused to comment on the subject in person, or to state whether he believed Smollett was telling the truth or if he thought it was all a complicated hoax.
& # 39; There are only two judges. God and that man wearing the cloak, & Daniels said.
& # 39; And I can't judge. I can only have compassion. & # 39;
He then explained why offering his own commentary was of little use by referring to the recent suicide of 15-year-old Nigel Shelby.
& # 39; I have had conversations with him and he is in great pain & # 39 ;, Daniels explained in reference to Smollett and then spoke about Nigel.
& # 39; But what I believe happened did not stop the little boy from hanging up on Friday. & # 39;
Listen: & # 39; I talked to him and he is in a lot of pain & # 39 ;, said Daniels (Smollett mugshot above)
Daniels, who tried to withdraw from the conversation after each question, was eventually asked if he was worried about the well-being of Smollet.
& # 39; If he's guilty, I'm worried about his mental health, & # 39; famous Daniels.
The Empire maker published a statement to the show's executive producers in February, stating that Smollett's character would be cut from the last two episodes of the fifth season after being struck with criminal charges, which we later dropped by prosecutors.
& # 39; The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us & # 39 ;, the letter began.
& # 39; Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care a lot about him. Although these allegations are very disturbing, we rely on the legal system as the trial goes on. & # 39;
It continued: & # 39; We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members working on our show and to prevent further disruptions on the set. We have decided to play the role of & # 39; Jamal & # 39; remove the season from the last two episodes of the set. & # 39;
Daniels had spoken out immediately after the attack and expressed his anger and concern about Smollett.
& # 39; It took me a minute to get to social media about this, because Jussie, you are my son & # 39 ;, said Daniels in a video on Instagram.
& # 39; You have not earned it, or someone deserves to have a sling around your neck, to have bleach thrown on you, to & # 39; who are called f **** t n **** r & # 39; or whatever they said to you. You are better than that. We are better than that. America is better than that. It starts at home. It starts at home, yo. We must love each other no matter what sexual orientation we have, because it shows that we are united on a united front and no racist idiot can come in and do the things they have done to you. & # 39;
He concluded with the words: & # 39; Hold your head up, Jussie. I share your opinion. I'll be there soon. It's just another f ****** day in America. & # 39;
