A would-be car thief has met his match after he allegedly tried to steal a car with a baby inside.
Seeing the baby’s mother getting out of a luxury 4WD Range Rover in Laverton, south-west of Melbourne, last Friday, the brazen opportunist targeted the vehicle, allegedly in an attempt to steal it.
What he didn’t realize was that sitting in the back seat with the baby was the baby’s 63-year-old grandmother.
The sensible grandmother was not going to allow anyone to steal her daughter’s car or, more importantly, her grandson’s.
The would-be robber, who has since been charged by police for allegedly taking part in a savage crime spree in the area, was punched in the face by the woman before fleeing to a car.
The driver of the getaway vehicle, which was allegedly stolen, was captured on CCTV dancing to rap music while speeding.
The owner of the 4×4 had just entered the post office to submit a passport application when her mother was forced to defend herself against the man.
Australian Post employee Leanne praised the quick-thinking grandmother as a “hero”.

Police alleged three men were responsible for several armed robberies and aggravated robberies in the area over three days last week.

Three men wearing high-visibility jackets allegedly broke into another home and stole jewellery, laptops and bank cards which were then used at a petrol station.
Three men aged 22, 22 and 21 were subsequently arrested in Broadmeadows, 27 kilometers north-east of Laverton.
Each of them was charged with a series of serious crimes including breaking and entering, assault and threats to kill.
The men were remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date.
