Lauren James was sent off after stomping on her opponent during England’s round of 16 clash with Nigeria at the Women’s World Cup.
James was shown a red card in the 87th minute of the match after his David Beckham-style stamp was deemed violent conduct by VAR.
The score was tied 0-0 when James stepped on the back of Michelle Alozie, forcing Sarina Wiegman’s team to end the game with 10 players.
Referee Melissa Borjas had initially given the 21-year-old England star a yellow card before consulting with the video assistant.
Borjas did not take long to make a decision. He returned to the field and drew a red card, telling James that he had deemed the incident violent conduct.
The altercation saw James, who had established himself as England’s top scorer with three goals in the tournament, go from hero to nil.
The wanton act of malice took place after James and Alozie collided. Both players were on the ground but it was James who got up first.
Once back on his feet, James decided to stand on Alozie’s lower back before running off to join the action.
