  • Muir can become the first British woman to win 1500 meters in the European Championship
  • The best Scottish personal performance of 3min 55sec is approximately five times faster than the next best
  • She has been driven by the decision of Sifan Hassan to focus on the 5,000 meters

For a woman accustomed to competing in high-quality fields on the world stage, Laura Muir is expected to enjoy a relative walk in the park in search of gold in Berlin on Sunday.

Nobody in the British team has become a stronger favorite than Muir in a 1500-meter field that is light on the elite opposition after Sifan Hassan's decision to focus on the 5,000m.

Muir's best personal result of 3min 55sec is around five faster than the next best result, his teammate Laura Weightman. Therefore, it would be a big stir if Muir does not become the first British woman in the history of the European Championship to win 1500 million gold.

Kelly Holmes was closer to silver in 1994 and Weightman took bronze in Zurich four years ago, but all signs point to Muir winning his first major outdoor medal, winning the silver and bronze medal in winter at the back of two European interior titles.

The big question is about what will happen in the worlds and the Olympics, given that the global scene is so piled up in the disciplines of Muir.

In favor of Scot, 25, is that all he has achieved so far has been along with a degree in veterinary medicine.

She was working up to 80 hours a week in college before the world championships in the interior and with that degree completed, she can focus on full-time athletics.

As a measure of how tight his schedule was, a trip to Canada after the championship will be his first vacation in five years.

She said: It's the end of the season and I have some big years to come, so maybe I do not have the opportunity to leave so much.

"I'll start in Toronto and then I'll go to Calgary in the Rockies and hopefully I'll see grizzly bears."
