McLaren youngster Lando Norris has claimed bragging rights over teammate and local hopeful Oscar Piastri at the Australian Grand Prix.

Drivers faced difficult conditions at Albert Park on Friday during the first free practice session (FP1), notably Thai Alex Albon.

The Williams driver lost control of his car exiting turn six and hit the wall, followed shortly after by the red flag.

Remarkably, he still qualified in 12th place.

The Albon incident came as several drivers suffered crashes on the rapid exit of Turn 10, including Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, who reported ground damage after dangerous excursions.

Norris proved to be an exception, finishing 0.018 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and 0.033 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell.

Piastri finished tenth, while fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished 11th.
