The murder has been seen by many as a defining moment in the fight to contain illegal immigration, and former President Donald Trump revealed that he also spoke to Riley’s parents after her murder.
During a trip to the southern border last week, Trump said he spoke with the parents shortly after charges were filed against Ibarra, saying they are “incredible people” who are “devastated beyond belief.”
‘(Riley) she was beautiful, so beautiful in so many ways. And brutally attacked, horribly beaten, kidnapped and savagely murdered,” she stated.

It was pushed by Republicans in the wake of Riley’s murder, allegedly at the hands of illegal immigrant Ibarra, who had previously been arrested in New York for child endangerment and in Georgia again in October 2023 on larceny charges.
The passage of the bill this week prompted Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, to post on Facebook: ‘Praise God! #SayHerName LAKEN HOPE RILEY BILL – APPROVED.’

Phillips previously spoke out following her daughter’s murder, saying on social media that she was comforted by how her “sweet Laken knew Jesus personally and will live eternally in her home.”
In response to the killing, Georgia Republican Rep. Mike Collins introduced the bill on his behalf, emphasizing that Ibarra “had no business being in this country.”

He also accused Republicans of “cooking up legislation targeting immigrants in an election year,” a claim refuted by those who felt it was long overdue.
Following the passage of the bill, House Speaker Mike Johnson stressed that ‘Laken Riley would still be alive if the Biden Administration had done its job.’
“House Republicans will not stand by while the president and his administration release dangerous criminals into our communities,” Johnson said in a statement.
‘The Laken Riley Act would help prevent future tragedies. If Senator Schumer and President Biden care about protecting Americans and are serious about border security, they will put this legislation to a vote and sign it into law immediately.’
Biden’s decision to speak out about Riley’s murder sparked anger among some Democrats on Thursday after he called the alleged killer “illegal” in an off-the-cuff moment.
The awkward confrontation within the party occurred during Greene’s booing, when she demanded that he say the name of the nursing student allegedly killed by the Venezuelan immigrant.
Her use of the term “illegal” sparked anger, with Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) later tweeting that “No human being is illegal.”
