Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend gelion

0

You have reached an important moment, perhaps not in history, or even in the grand scheme of your lifelong arc to love and fulfillment, but an important moment nonetheless. Do I spell it for you? It’s 5:00 pm. On a Friday. Heading for a long weekend.

What is a “weekend angel” you may ask? Obviously, “weekend” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion” are merged. You could have just Googled that, but I get it – it’s your free time! I respect your commitment to doing the bare minimum for the next three days. What does a beloved 90s anime series have to do with, as the creator of the above video puts it, the pursuit of COLD BEER, GOOD FRIENDS and FREEDOM? At first glance, absolutely nothing, except that its theme song – “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”:

  • is memetic fodder since it was technologically feasible for unpaid internet buffs to insert it into unrelated situations or media properties.
  • was briefly the protagonist of Twitter this week a very real, official, Olympic hockey documentary was completely rediscovered due to the song’s direct inclusion in the opening edit.
  • should be the national anthem for the whole summer and for the summer in the future.

You may not be in my time zone (Eastern Standard, the ideal time zone, New York numbah one babyyy), in which case this post either isn’t for you yet or hopefully hasn’t reached your screen because you’ve already slung over a hammock, covered in snack crumbs, and lightly doused in the hedonistically dripped leftovers from your favorite drink. Well done! Everyone else, please remove Slack from your phone, throw that phone in the nearest ocean or fresh water body and go hammock guy level. Not that it’s a competition. The last thing anyone should do right now is make some form of effort.

You made it to the weekend gelion.

Congratulations.
