The Los Angeles Times made a notable error in its obituary of OJ Simpson, which was published Thursday following the announcement of the former NFL player’s death from cancer at the age of 76.
In the version that originally appeared on the Times site, the first sentence of the penultimate paragraph of the lengthy obituary read:
“Long before the city woke up one fall morning in 2017, Trump walked out of Lovelock Correctional Facility outside Reno, a free man for the first time in nine years.”
The error, which used former President Donald Trump’s name instead of Simpson, was quickly corrected, but not before Internet sleuths were able to take screenshots and share them.
TO publish in X by Politico Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton, which has been viewed about 300,000 times, highlighted the error.
Former President Donald Trump and OJ Simpson in 1993. Before the gruesome murders of his ex-wife and her friend that would change Simpson’s life, he had been invited to Trump’s second wedding.
It was an unfortunate mistake for the left-wing outlet whose editorial has not-so-subtly hinted that it would like see Trump spend some time behind bars.
The editorial board operates separately from news reporters and obituary writers, but the newspaper is one of many in the mainstream media that have covered the former president with a degree of scrutiny and disdain that makes readers wonder. if there is bias.
Trump has had little connection with Simpson in the 30 years since the gruesome murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
Simpson was, in fact, invited to Trump’s second wedding – to Marla Maples – in 1993, a few months before the double homicide that would change Simpson’s life.
Several years ago, TMZ asked Simpson about Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address. He told the outlet that he “stays out of politics” and that he didn’t “know the president.”
But before he walked away from the cameras, Simpson gave some free advice to then-President Trump, who at the time was facing his first impeachment trial.
He warned Trump to stay away from people “like Roger Stone,” the president’s longest-serving political adviser who was arrested in 2019 and charged with seven counts related to obstruction of justice.
The FBI carried out a dramatic raid on Stone’s residence early in the morning, which many considered was too harsh treatment of the elderly adviser.
Stone criticized federal law enforcement agents for what he said was an overreach executed with more force than those involved in the capture of Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ and Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the last of who was killed on the spot and the Navy SEALs threw his body into the ocean.
Simpson took a slightly different view: ‘Let me say this. You know, the FBI raided me in Miami.
—Thirty-something FBI agents, at five in the morning, and I had more than dogs. I had children there.
‘The FBI may be wrong, but trying to compare it to “El Chapo” and Bin Laden? Hey, Bin Laden was taken out in a bag, not handcuffed. There are so many upstairs, stop crying,’ he said.
Simpson died at age 76 on Thursday, years after he became famous following his arrest in connection with a double murder.
A post by X shared on his official account by his family read: “On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer.”

Murder victim Ronald Goldman’s father said Simpson’s death only serves as a reminder of the agony his family has suffered over the years.
“The only thing I have to say today is that this is one more reminder of the loss of my son Ron,” Fred Goldman told DailyMail.com.
“It is yet another reminder of my son’s murder and the many years we have missed Ron.”
