Kylian Mbappe is reportedly set to become one of Europe’s top club owners and the Real Madrid star is close to taking over French side SM Caen.

Mbappé left French club football this summer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired last month.

The French superstar completed a free transfer to Real Madrid and was unveiled in front of 80,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this month.

Mbappe is expected to retain his interest in French football and there are reports the striker is keen to complete a £17m (€20m) deal to buy French second division side SM Caen.

French newspaper The Parisian Talks have reportedly been ongoing for several weeks and an agreement is expected to be reached “in the next few hours.”

The deal would reportedly see Mbappe buy out US investment fund Oaktree Capital, which bought an 80 per cent stake in the club in 2020.

Mbappé would become the club’s majority shareholder, with current supervisory board chairman Pierre Antoine Capton retaining his 20 percent stake.

Oaktree Capital is expected to focus its efforts on Inter Milan after taking control of the club in May.

If Mbappé completes the deal, he would become the owner of the French second division team at just 25 years old.

Caen scout David Lasry revealed in a BBC documentary that the club came close to signing Mbappe when the striker was just 13.

Mbappe’s father has reportedly confirmed that they have agreed for his son to join the club, which is based in Normandy.

However, the deal fell through when Caen were relegated from Ligue 1 to the second division in 2012.

Instead, Mbappé would join Monaco’s academy, with the striker then breaking into the first team before joining PSG.

Le Parisien reported that Mbappé and his family have maintained a good relationship with Caen, which has led to a deal being sought.

Mbappé and his mother Fayza Lamari are reportedly planning to appoint Ziad Hammoud as club president once the takeover is completed.

Hammoud was previously director of strategy and investment at BeIN Media Group, and now oversees Mbappé’s image company.

French reports claim Mbappé plans to maintain the club’s identity, with a focus on developing young players.

Caen finished fifth in Ligue 2 last season, with the club last competing in French football’s top flight in the 2018-19 campaign.
