Kyle Chalmers has failed to reach the semi-finals at the world championships in a disappointing display after his controversial U-turn earlier this year.

Chalmers sparked outrage after he backtracked on his original decision not to travel to Hungary, which prevented his compatriot Cody Simpson from competing in the world championships.

The saga was further intensified after Simpson was revealed to be in a relationship with Chalmers’ ex-girlfriend and swimmer Emma McKeon, though Chalmers vehemently denies any suggestion that his U-turn was fueled by a personal grudge.

However, the 26-year-old has not made the most of his spot in Budapest, where he had to be eliminated early after finishing 22nd in the field in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Only the top 16 qualified for the semi-finals and Chalmers made a miserable attempt by setting a time that was a second slower than the pace at which he qualified for the event in Hungary.
