KYIV, Ukraine – With the electricity off, the Frankly coffee shop in central Kiev had to cook syrnyky – Ukrainian cheese pancakes – on a small propane camping stove. Baristas made drip coffee and tea using a large vessel of hot water, boiled before the power outage.
Sales were 86% lower than a week earlier, when the lights were still on. The owners asked a relative to buy a generator in Poland, since affordable models are sold out in Ukraine. They design a menu for cold dishes and light the cafe with candles.
