Decision Desk projects that Rep. Roger Marshall wins the Republican Senate primaries in Kansas, a huge blow to contender Kris Kobach. It is also a blow to the political ambitions of billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel, who had enthusiastically supported Kobach and provided public support and significant PAC funding to the candidate’s primary bid.
Much of Thiel’s support came through the Free Forever Political Action Committee, which received the bulk of Thiel’s funding and bought ads solely in support of Kobach and in opposition to Marshall. A recent Free Forever PAC mailing accused Marshall of funding “global warming musicals” and “transgender plays” for voting in support of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Kobach distinguished himself in Republican circles with his hard anti-immigration positions, especially his role in promoting a Muslim register in the early days of the Trump administration. As a result, many party leaders feared that he would cost the party in general elections. Last week, a leader of the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned his colleagues that a victory by Kobach could undermine the party’s chances of maintaining control of the Senate. as reported by Politico.
