A man has died after being bitten by a snake in rural Queensland.
The 69-year-old was bitten multiple times after trying to remove a snake wrapped around another man’s ankle in Koumala, about 60km south of Mackay.
The incident, near Koumala public school, occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday evening.
According to the Queensland Ambulance Service, the man was punched several times in the chest and arm while trying to help another man.

Despite the efforts of those at the scene, his condition rapidly deteriorated and he died before paramedics could respond.

The other man was bitten during the encounter and was taken to Mackay Hospital.
The Queensland Ambulance Service said the death should serve as a reminder to watch out for snakes.
Queensland is home to around 78 species of venomous snakes, although only 12 of these are considered “potentially dangerous” by the Queensland Government.
There were 846 bites recorded in 2022.
