Kit Harington has admitted he feels “lucky” to have kicked his alcohol addiction before having children.

The 37-year-old Game Of Thrones star, who shares two children with his wife and former co-star Rose Leslie, checked into a rehab facility in the US for treatment for stress and alcohol abuse in 2019.

Speaking in a candid interview with GQKit, who played Jon Snow in the HBO drama, told how amid his drinking addiction, he “hated himself” and found it hard to feel proud of any of his achievements.

But after overcoming his demons and starting a family, he feels like “a completely different person.”

Speaking about her sobriety journey, Kit explained: “I was very lucky that I got sober before I had kids… because there was a time when it felt physically and emotionally impossible for me not to drink again.”

He continued: “Before I stopped drinking, I would look in the mirror and call myself an idiot. I hated myself. I literally despised myself and I wasn’t proud of anything I had done. I couldn’t feel proud. So the fact that I am proud that I stopped drinking is in itself a sign that I am a completely different person.”

He added that before he got sober, his relationship with alcohol felt like a “huge monkey” on his back that “weighed him down,” and the star noted that now being able to be proud of himself is a “relatively new perspective.”

Despite his new outlook on life, the actor admitted he could not guarantee he would not fall into the trap again, adding that he could well have a “messy, chaotic relapse.”

Kit and his wife Rose, 37, tied the knot in Scotland in 2018 and share a three-year-old son and daughter whom they welcomed in June 2023.

The TV star went on to say that being a father has made him less “self-centered” and that everything in life is centered around them.

He shared: “I say this with fondness for myself: I’m pretty self-centered. I think I’m a generous and loving person (too). But with kids, you just can’t be self-centered. They take it away from you. And that’s an incredible gift. (Kids) are ultimately completely self-centered. They don’t think about anyone but themselves.”

Comes after Kit revealed that she “misses” her family when she attended the premiere of the third season of her hit show HBO Industry Series in New York last week.

Kit told how he recently missed his little girl “taking her first steps” while he was away filming.

‘With our first child there was something kind of romantic, so to speak, and with this one we thought: ‘Okay, let’s have it.’

We know how efficient we have to be. Let’s get to work.

“My mom says she doesn’t remember much about when we were kids or when we were parents, because you’re so present in everything. And I think that’s what children allow you to be, to be incredibly present in the moment, because you don’t have a choice.”
