A man was shot dead after allegedly threatening officers with a knife at a police station.

Queensland Police say the man confronted officers at Kirwan Police Station in Townsville, north Queensland, after 10pm on Saturday.

The man was shot before officers provided him with first aid.

He was declared dead a short time later.

It is unclear how many times the man was shot.

A crime scene has been established and parts of Thuringowa Drive have been temporarily closed.

The Ethics Standards Command will launch an investigation into the incident.

Police will give more details about the incident on Sunday.
