A Queensland suburb has been on lockdown following a confrontation between police and a gunman.
Residents have been told to stay indoors after hearing gunshots in Kirwan, near Townsville, just before 9pm on Sunday.
The emergency services have issued an emergency declaration and the situation continues until Monday morning.

Locals reportedly heard several shots, but it is not known if the shots were fired by the gunman or by the police.

Residents living in the exclusion zone have been told to stay indoors and police not to let anyone in or out of the area.
One woman recalled that everyone in the area felt “on edge.”
“I’ve never been around anything like this, it’s a bit wild,” he said.
“I just feel supportive, everyone’s a little nervous, but we’re all surrounded by each other and it calms everyone’s nerves.”
