Viewers of Kirstie and Phil’s Love It Or List It have branded a couple as having “more money than sense” after they decided to sell up, despite making a £71,000 loss.
Doctors Aneri and Nihar attended the show with a cozy three-bedroom terrace cottage in the expensive Hertfordshire village of Radlett, worth £679,000.
However, while the area had good transport links to London, was close to their offices and very close to their young daughter’s school, Aneri felt they were outgrowing their small house.
Aneri and Nihar decided to hire property experts Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer, who appeared on Wednesday night’s episode of their Channel 4 show, giving them a budget of £100,000 to renovate their current home and £750,000 to find a new one.
Aneri said she was firmly “on the team list” and felt the current floor plan of the closed traditional hut “didn’t flow” and that meant she felt isolated from her family.
However, her partner Nihar did not agree with her throughout the show and wanted to stay in her family home, which caused tension between the couple.
Aneri and Nihar initially had a budget of £100,000 to do renovations on their home, but it soon ballooned and the couple ended up spending a whopping £166,000.
They soon began work for over a year, which included extending their front porch to build a downstairs wet room, installing an air source heat pump, car charging point, replacing all windows, installing doors french windows and tear down the wall between the kitchen and living room.

However, their decision apparently surprised Kirstie and Phil when they told the property gurus that they were actually selling the house.
The job alone added an extra £95,000 to their house, meaning they lost £71,000 by fixing up their house for someone else to live in.
Lovers of the show were also amazed by her choice and took to X to express their thoughts.
One wrote: ‘Why would you spend so much knowing you would go over the maximum price?’ More money than common sense.
Another wrote: ‘How can they publish it when they’ve spent so much money?! Idiots.’ A third said: ‘Isn’t that a $76,000 loss? Or am I missing something? Why are they so happy?
A fourth commented: ‘How on earth did they spend £166,000 and only get a poorly designed bathroom on the ground floor?’
When Kirstie and Phil came to see the newly renovated house, Aneri seemed in high spirits as she commented on the open kitchen, saying: “It was the worst part of the house and now it’s my favorite part.”

They wanted a new bathroom downstairs and decided to expand the porch area to incorporate it into their plan.

He also said they recently hosted 20 people at the property for a birthday party and “it worked.”
However, although she spoke fondly of her house, she and Nihar had only made the decision to list it a day before the Channel 4 team came to find out about their choice.
Nihar said: “We have had a lot of conversations and a lot of not talking to each other,” hinting that selling was not a conclusion they reached lightly.
When Kirstie broke the news that they had lost £71,000, she tried to put a positive spin on the situation, saying it was an “investment in all our futures” because of the green improvements they paid for.
And this did not go unnoticed by viewers. One wrote: ‘Kirsty (sic) trying to find the silver lining…
‘You put a toilet on the porch, you did a lot of unnecessary work, it took a lot of time and you lost money but… “At least you can think you’re investing in all of our futures.”‘
Another wrote: “Invest in all our futures.” Piles of concrete, diesel vans going up and down for 18 months and a hideous, inefficient heat pump that will be decommissioned in five years.’
Aneri said: “We both agree that this is not our permanent home and that we are going to outgrow the house very quickly.”
While Nihar admitted that looking at other houses with Phil “opened our eyes to areas we hadn’t considered”.

Hearing the value they had added to the house, Aneri and Nihar seemed optimistic, despite having lost tens of thousands of pounds.
Aneri said: “I’m actually surprised, it’s more than I thought.” Nihar added: “I am very surprised, it will allow me to sleep much better.”
On the show, Phil took the couple around a number of different neighbourhoods, including Dunstable, Knebworth and Abotts Langley, to see what their £750,000 budget could get them.
All the houses they went to see had 4 bedrooms, with bathrooms on the ground floor and some even had a private bathroom.
And Nihar seemed convinced of Aneri’s decision to seek new pastures, after saying one of them had the “garden of dreams”.
However, it’s unclear if the couple ended up purchasing any of the homes they viewed, as work on their own home took more than 13 months to complete.
