Kingaroy (pictured) is a rural Queensland town with a population of just over 10,000 people. It is understood the attacker, who fled before police arrived, was not known to the man he stabbed.
Another man, unknown to the 42-year-old, fled the scene before police arrived.
Queensland Police are urging people who saw anything suspicious at the time of the incident to come forward.
They are also appealing to anyone who may have relevant dash cam/CCTV footage to come forward.
The investigations continue.
