Brown sauce has overtaken tomato ketchup as the UK’s favorite condiment, according to a new study.
The sauce, with its tangy and tangy taste, has caught on as people aged 65 and over say it is their favorite “strong and bold” flavor.
The study, conducted by Fentimans, found that customers loved the sauce for its “perfect blend of spices and vinegar”, the Daily Star reports.
The distinctive taste of brown gravy is made from a combination of tomatoes, dates, molasses and vinegar.
Although it has been called the best sauce, the study did not resolve the age-old debate over which brown sauce variety is better: HP or Daddies.
The ketchup is out and the brown sauce is in! A study by Fentimans found that tomato ketchup is no longer the nation’s favorite condiment.
However, not all age groups are fans of this condiment – with Gen Z dismissing it as “old fashioned”.
But the decline in tomato ketchup’s popularity could also be due to the TikTok generation, who had previously shunned the sweet and tangy condiment, calling it “unhealthy.”
Another investigation conducted last year by Vadasz Pickles and Ferments and reported in Yahoo! found that younger people thought ketchup was “outdated.”
According to the study, 33% of Brits under the age of 26 thought the condiment was past its prime.
A similar proportion of young people (29%) think the same about brown sauce, while 21% would say English mustard is an old-fashioned condiment.
Instead, Gen Z is choosing heat in their condiments – preferring to top their meals with sriracha and wasabi.
In particular, younger generations are turning to fermented condiments, preferring things like kimchi and sauerkraut.
Nick Vadasz, founder of Vadasz Pickles and Ferments, who commissioned the survey of 2,000 Britons, said: “With the average bottle of ketchup containing 78 grams of sugar, it’s not really surprising that we’re seeing a trend among young people to turn their backs.” less healthy sauces and condiments – and a rise in popularity of super condiments filled with natural ingredients and rich in probiotics; excellent for gut health and immunity.
But since brown sauce reigns supreme, it proves that “fancy” condiments don’t pack enough punch to knock old favorites out of the top spot.
Mel B, also known as “Scary Spice”, previously revealed to The temperature she never leaves the house without “carrying packets of HP brown sauce.”
And if it’s good enough for a Spice Girl, it’s good enough for anyone.
