King Charles’ royal Australian tour LIVE: His Majesty and Queen Camilla visit Canberra after warm welcome in Sydney

King Charles and Queen Camilla will spend just one day in the country’s capital on Monday, where they are expected to be greeted by thousands of fans.

While in Canberra, the Royals will visit the Australian War Memorial, where they will lay a wreath at the grave of the Unknown Soldier, where The Last Post will play before a minute’s silence.

The couple will separate to attend different events, but both will take a walk through the National Botanical Garden on Monday afternoon.

King Charles is expected to give a speech at 1pm before he can meet those gathered to watch the royal visit.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will also host a reception for Charles and Camilla inside the Great Hall of Parliament.

Charles will visit the CSIRO National Bushfire Research Center to meet firefighters and scientists.

Meanwhile, the Queen will take part in a roundtable discussion on the issue of domestic violence.

Charles and Camilla have official engagements in Sydney on Tuesday before returning to the UK.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will greet the crowds from 12.35pm at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Those wishing to see Their Majesties are urged to arrive no later than 11.45am to carry out security checks and avoid road closures.

Visitors will have another chance to see the King and Queen later at Parliament House.

Royal fans must arrive before 12:10 p.m.

A small group of anti-monarchy protesters had gathered outside St Thomas’ Anglican Church in Sydney’s north on Sunday morning for the royal visit.

They gathered under a large banner reading “decolonize” about 100 meters away, but they failed to spoil the joyful atmosphere.

Protesters used a megaphone to shout their support for indigenous rights and waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags.

A handful of locals frustratedly shouted “get lost” and “get a life” as they walked by, while one man told them: “Be grateful you live in a free society where you can argue across the street.”

Fans waiting inside the church grounds to shake hands with the King and Queen described the ongoing republican debate as “boring”.

After the King and Queen arrived, protesters were drowned out by shouts of “hip hip hooray” and blocked from view by hundreds of camera phones held aloft.

The King and Queen were warmly welcomed in Sydney during their visit to St Thomas’ Anglican Church on Sunday.

As they were presented with armloads of flowers, toy koalas and even some kangaroo jerky, the couple were repeatedly thanked for making the long journey, particularly in light of Her Majesty’s ongoing cancer treatment.

Fans waiting inside the church grounds, including dozens of Sunday school children, were excited to shake hands with the King and Queen, while others described the ongoing republican debate as “boring”.

Then a child shouted in delight: “I touched the King!” “He was so good, he was so kind,” another girl said.

Leaving the church to loud applause from the hundreds gathered on the lawn in front of the church, the King saluted before approaching to speak to the public.

Some supporters said they had started queuing at 5am to get a prime spot to see the couple, and others in the crowd arrived especially from other parts of Australia.
