President Joe Biden recently offered clemency to 16 people imprisoned for nonviolent drug offenses, and four of the newly released inmates were present.
The Biden administration declared April Second Chance Month, and the vice president thanked him for defending Kardashian and for “using her platform in a way that has really highlighted the importance of talking about and pursuing second chances.”
“I feel very honored to be here to continue this fight, to learn more every day, every visit, every administration,” said the trainee lawyer.
“I’m just here to help and spread the word.”
Kardashian has worked on a bipartisan effort to help people who have been behind bars for decades due to strict drug laws. Biden said she granted the pardons because they were serving longer sentences than they would have received under “current law, policy and practice.”
In 2018, the lawyer met with former President Donald Trump to ask for a commutation of Alice Marie Johnson’s sentence.

Johnson had served 21 years for a nonviolent drug offense before his sentence was commuted.
Four previously pardoned people were at the meeting and shared their experiences founding new businesses or nonprofits or volunteering in their communities since their release.
“Every time I’ve visited a prison, I’ve met some of the smartest people with the brightest ideas,” Kardashian said. “And I think seeing the changes that are taking place to facilitate their re-entry will be life-changing and give hope to a lot of people.”
