Kim Kardashian recalled an early breakthrough she had in therapy while speaking to her older sister, Kourtney, on the season finale of The Kardashians.

After revealing she started seeing a therapist, following years of urging from the Poosh founder, the 43-year-old reality star revealed she experienced a “lightbulb moment” during a recent session.

While she previously described her ability to stay calm in emergency situations as her “superpower” over the years, the mother of four said her therapist suggested it could be a “trauma response” from living in “fight or flight mode.”

Earlier this season, Kim, who admitted she was reluctant to start therapy, spoke about how her level-headedness may have developed from becoming “so desensitized to trauma.”

While speaking to Khloé Kardashian, Kim said her therapist theorized that her instinct to stay calm in times of crisis was likely due to a past event.

Kim said her therapist told her, ‘Once in your life, something happened and you stayed calm, and that worked for you, so you’ll always choose calm.’

Khloé speculated that the traumatic event that changed her mindset might have been when she was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room in 2016.

During the terrifying incident, Kim was robbed of $10 million worth of jewelry and had her wrists and ankles bound.

“You don’t think your robbery was a robbery?” Khloé pointed out. “You weren’t calm before. Kim, you were a lunatic.”

Khloé recalled how Kim “was never calm as a teenager” or in her twenties and would cry “about everything.”

“You were a spoiled brat, you threw tantrums,” Khloe recalled. “That all stopped after you were robbed. Because you remained calm in that situation, and you even said, ‘My calmness is what kept me alive.'”

During a confession, Kim reflected on how she was pointed at with a gun, “tied up” and “dragged around a hotel room” while a man told her: “Stay calm and you will live.”

“I did it and it was helpful at the time and I think it saved my life,” he said.

Kourtney was excited to hear that Kim was in therapy.

“Kourtney is back from Australia and I’ve been waiting patiently to tell her about my experience with therapy. As a kid I always said that Kourtney did everything first and that I copied her, and it’s kind of true,” Kim said in a confession.

She added, ‘When someone tells me not to do something that I had planned, I’m physically like, “You’re getting in my way, and I’m going to bulldoze through everything that’s in my way, because you’re not going to tell me to change my schedule,” and I feel like that’s how I would behave in relationships, like when (censored) started saying to me, “You work so much. Why don’t you just take the week off?” And I was like, “Get out of here.” Take the week off? That was the beginning of the end.

While talking about therapy, Kim told Kourtney: ‘You had to go through that first, and then I was like ‘I’m going to do this.’

Kim added: “You had to go through that first, and then I was like, ‘I’m going to do this,'” as Kourtney says, “Now you see why I wanted you guys to be in this.”

‘My therapist told me she watched the show and said, ‘All of your sisters need therapy, especially you, Khloe and your mom.’

Kourtney told Kim she also identified with becoming quieter due to trauma and having a tendency to “downplay everything almost as a form of self-protection.”

“I think that’s why in emergency situations I feel like my superpower is being calm,” Kourtney told her sister.

When a producer asked if her family should do family therapy, Kourtney immediately said no.

“Absolutely not. Everyone is in a different place in the board game, you know, getting to the finish line, and I feel like everyone does whatever they want,” he explained.

In 2021, Kim said she became a “completely different person” after the robbery, which occurred during Paris Fashion Week.

To feel safe, she said she never allows “expensive items” into her home.

“As far as jewelry, if I wear anything, it’s borrowed. It’s fake,” she told Andy Cohen during the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reunion.

She added: “I can’t sleep if I have jewelry in my safe, or money, or anything in my house. I just don’t live my life like that.”

As well as doubling down on her personal security, she has spoken openly about being less flashy and her reluctance to wear expensive jewellery after the robbery.

“On the plus side, I’m a completely different person because of it, in the best way,” he reflects. “(Before the robbery), I had to have the coolest car, the best tires, the best clothes and I thought I was the best because of that. I thought that was what made me a person.”

She continued: “The things I valued before that happened were actually completely different than what I value now. It’s fun to dress up and all that, but (material) things don’t define me.”

The traumatic incident also “significantly changed” her relationship with her sister Khloé.

While noting that “Kim was obviously a great sister before,” the Good American founder, 40, said there’s been a “significant shift in how” Kim “tends to her relationships and the attention she now gives to her family instead of red carpets or things like that.”

“I mean our relationship has changed significantly,” Khloe noted.

While appearing on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman in 2021, Kim admitted that she feared her older sister, Kourtney, would return and “find her dead” in her room at the Hôtel de Pourtalès.

“I kept thinking about Kourtney, I kept thinking that she would come home and I would be dead in the bedroom and she would be traumatized for the rest of her life,” Kim recalled through tears.

Kim and Kourtney traveled together to Paris, France in October 2016 to attend Paris Fashion Week.

The KKW Beauty founder noted that Kourtney had “packed all of (Kim’s) jewelry” for the trip, something she had “never done before.”

Kim explained that on the night of the robbery, Kourtney left her hotel with the sisters’ only bodyguard, meaning Kim was completely alone in her suite.

Then, around 3 a.m., Kardashian recalled hearing “floors coming up the stairs” that sounded like a group of people were getting closer and closer to her room.

Kim told David Letterman that something about the noise instantly made her feel like “someone was there to help her” so she decided to call for help.

Kim said the whole experience made her “really paranoid.”

As she continued to recall the terrifying event for Letterman, Kim broke down in tears.

She explained that at the time of the robbery, she was wearing only a robe and one of the intruders “grabbed” her aggressively.

“I was like, ‘Okay, now it’s time for me to get raped. That’s it, this is going to happen, just be prepared,'” Kim recalled to Letterman.

‘So I did and then, I don’t know why I’m crying, I’ve talked about this before, and then he tied me up with handcuffs and zip ties and then with duct tape and he covered my mouth and eyes with duct tape.’

Kim said the whole experience made her “really paranoid.”

The attackers were finally arrested in January 2017 and Kim learned that they had been monitoring her every move “for two years at that point.”
