Kim Kardashian made a series of fashion faux pas at Ambani’s wedding celebrations in Mumbai over the weekend.
With a budget of a quarter of a billion pounds, a guest list to rival the Met Gala and a crowd of former world leaders dancing the night away, Ambani’s wedding was arguably the world’s biggest.
It’s no surprise then that Kim, 43, was on the VIP guest list, joining the likes of Boris and Carrie Johnson, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, in celebrating the union of Anant and Radhika Ambani, both 29.
But unlike the other guests, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star appeared to forgo tradition when it came to her attire, despite opting for Indian-inspired outfits.
In a gesture that could be considered inappropriate, Kim wore the bride’s red (a mistake not unlike a guest wearing white at a wedding in the UK) and sported a nose ring, called a nath, also traditionally reserved for the bride.
Kim Kardashian made a number of fashion blunders at Ambani’s wedding in Mumbai over the weekend, including wearing the bride’s colour red.
The TV personality was among the VIP guests when Anant Ambani, the son of India’s richest man, exchanged vows with pharmaceutical heiress Radhika Merchant at a star-studded ceremony at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai.
Hindu priests performed the ceremony, chanting ancient Sanskrit verses as the couple walked around a sacred fire. They also took seven vows to solemnize their marriage.
On Saturday, a traditional ‘divine blessing ceremony’ known as ‘Shubh Aashirwad’ was held at the same venue that hosted the reception.
The dates of the ceremonies were chosen by a Hindu priest according to the auspicious days in Anant and Radhika’s birth charts.
Given that the celebrations lasted several days, it’s no surprise that Kim planned a number of outfit changes.
On Friday, the Skims founder revealed her first Bollywood-inspired outfit: a red lehenga, a traditional outfit made with an ankle-length skirt and a top of her choice.
“I’m going to a wedding,” Kim said in a video on her Instagram Stories. She also shared that the cameras from her TV show The Kardashians were with her.
Despite being her first look of the event, Kim had already made a mistake in etiquette: wearing red.
The TV personality, who was accompanied by her sister Khloe Kardashian, wore a nose ring called a nath, which is traditionally associated with the bride.
Kim took to Instagram to share a photo of herself wearing a red bindi, indicating she had attended a religious ceremony, but sharing the snap in a Skims bra could be seen as disrespectful.
Both the bride and groom sported red elements in their outfits. Pictured: Anant Ambani, left, son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, holds hands with Radhika Merchant during their wedding ceremony at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India, Friday, July 12, 2024.
In Hindu traditions, red is reserved for the bride, meaning guests should avoid that color for fear of upsetting or upstaging the bride.
Brides wear red as a sign of good luck for the future, prosperity and to ward off evil spirits.
Kim was not the only one, people like Cherie Blair, the wife of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, were also among those who wore red to the wedding celebrations.
The 43-year-old’s lehenga blouse could also be considered inappropriate. While blouses vary and often adopt a modern style, many choose to dress modestly when attending a Hindu ceremony.
But that wasn’t the only red look for the mother of four, as she chose to wear a ruby red ensemble on Sunday night.
The reality TV star completed her ensemble with emerald green jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, including rings, earrings and an intricately designed headpiece.

While the Lorraine Schwartz pieces weren’t dramatic, Kim’s nose ring that complemented her ivory sari on a different occasion was a controversial choice.
Kim attended the Blessings Ceremony on Sunday in a traditional lehenga skirt adorned with intricate beaded detailing, while Khloe Kardashian dazzled in a dramatic pink ensemble.
As Kim and Khloe prepared to travel to their “divine blessings” wedding ceremony, the sisters were easy to spot in their extravagant outfits.
This time, it wasn’t Kim’s outfit, but her nose ring or nath, which is a nose jewel that connects to the ear or a toupee.
Traditional jewellery, which dates back centuries, is once again a popular choice for Hindu brides on their wedding day because it symbolises a woman’s marital status and fertility.
Separately, Kim took to Instagram to share a post from India wearing a Skims bra over the weekend, with the caption: “Bless me.”
The addition of a red bindi on her forehead indicates that she had attended one of the religious ceremonies.
Again, your attire could be considered disrespectful if worn in a religious setting, as attendees at religious events often choose to cover their chest and shoulders.
