Kim Kardashian accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ for wearing earrings with Hindu religious symbol Om… but some Indian fans are jumping in her defense

Kim Kardashian has been accused of “cultural appropriation” for wearing a pair of earrings with a Hindu symbol, in a series of photos posted to her Twitter account last month.

The 40-year-old reality star caught the eye of some of her followers by donning the earrings featuring Om, the central sacred symbol of Hinduism, as she lay across a pink bed showing off her plunging neckline.

But while some social media users criticized her for using the religious symbol as an ‘accessory’, other Indian fans also appreciated the jewelry and jumped on the defensive saying they didn’t see it as ‘disrespectful’.

Spot Them: Kim Kardashian recently caused a storm on Twitter in a photo shoot that saw her lounging on a pink bed wearing Om earrings

Om symbols have been popular in America for decades as Eastern philosophy and Hindu cultural traditions such as yoga have grown in popularity.

But amid the recent “cultural appropriation” debates, Kim’s jewelry selection got her hooked up with some Twitter users.

“Is now a good time to mention that the Om is a sacred symbol for Hindus and not just an accessory?” wrote a Ria Sen.

Twitter user Niyati Sharma exclaimed: ‘STOP CULTURAL APPLICATION OF INDIAN CULTURE!!! WHAT’S UP WITH THOSE EARRINGS GIRLLLL???’

One of Kim’s replies was from someone named Krishti who moaned, “Not the Om symbol as an accessory,” while a Vivek Bandhekar wrote, “Om is the Hindu’s sacred symbol… What the hell is she doing with that.”

“WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THAT RELIGION IS NOT AESTHETIC,” another Twitter user scolded Kim under her photos.

However, a number of Twitter users with Hindu names didn’t mind the jewelry, such as one Nitish Chauhan who wrote that she “looked fantastic” in the photos.

“I don’t see this as disrespectful at all. How can you assume beyond reasonable doubt that she is ignorant of its origin?’ argued a fan named Aaron Nair. ‘Because she’s a Kardashian? Prejudice. And to reduce Hinduism to a ‘religion’ is first of all shortsighted. [Om] is so much more than a ‘sacred’ symbol.’

‘If the Om can be worn around the neck, why can’t it be worn as an earring? People who lash out at Kim are just doing some kind of propaganda to label Hindus as bigoted, which is definitely not the case with Hindus,” wrote one Pinaki Dutta.

A Twitter user who identified himself as Sunny replied to Kim’s tweet: ‘Hi Kim..cool style…I’m a Hindu, actually a Rajput and a proud Indian….n I love your style… Religion is about tolerance …. if we can wear a cross or Om in pendant … then we can also take your earrings in the right spirit …’

One Twitter user joked: ‘Ayo where are the BJP mfs?? Look at this,” referring to India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party.

Kim has been in trouble before over allegations of Indian ‘cultural appropriation’ – one case was when she wrote Vogue India in 2018.

The fact that she wore an Indian lehenga in the magazine also caused some controversy, although the garment belonged to Indian designer Anita Dongre and the look was put together by Indian stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania.

There was much talk about her — in a comment she has since apologized for — calling Indian food “disgusting” on Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2012.

Last year, she posed on social media in a crop top and skirt with an ornately designed Indian Maang Tikka, which once again caused a stir.

She was criticized on Twitter by some commentators, including one who wrote in Hindi that “even her brain is made of plastic.”

However Vogue India praising the look, saying, ‘worn with a Maang tikka, Kim Kardashian West’s crop top + skirt is a great alternative to lehengas.’

Kim had previously worn a Maang tikka at a Sunday service hosted by her now-estranged husband Kanye West in 2019, sparking a similar controversy.
