Khabib Nurmagomedov has urged Conor McGregor to retire to stage a highly anticipated rematch between the pair – but he insisted he beat Dustin Poirer first.
The Russian lightweight champion fought the Irishman in 2018, beating him via a fourth-round submission in a controversial match that saw a scuffle between members of the other teams.
A second fight has since been touted, and while Khabib has been less than open about the possibility in the past, he now believes McGregor is better off than his upcoming opponent Justin Gaethje and that a rematch could be staged in the future.

‘For the fight with [Edson] Barbosa, they said he was my most awkward rival, then they said the same before the fight with Conor, then with [Dustin] Poirier, ”he said prior to his fight with the American on Oct. 24, as reported by RT.
‘They didn’t have time to say that [Al] Iaquinta for arguing with me in a few hours. I’m sympathetic to this, but journalists need to say something to warm their interest in the fight.
‘But I do agree that Gaethje is a very good fighter, if he was bad he wouldn’t have fought for the belt. Is he better than Conor? I do not think so. My fighting IQ tells me Conor is more capable than Gaethje. ‘

“Let him come back (and) beat Dustin Poirier and we’ll fight him – no problem,” he says Nurmagomedov.
Poirer is currently ahead of McGregor in the UFC rankings in ninth place. The Irishman, ranked 12th, expressed dismay at the call when he called him a ‘pea’ after knocking him out in 2014.
“How does the pea rank for me?” McGregor said in May. ‘I turned it on in 90 seconds.
