Kevin De Bruyne has hailed Manchester City’s underrated star as he finds himself on the verge of a record fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Pep Guardiola’s side need only match Arsenal’s result this weekend to stand alone in top-flight history and, if they do, they will be grateful for the contributions of several star players as well as their manager.
On Thursday, Phil Foden was named Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year, while midfield metronome Rodri is regularly hailed for his crucial contribution to City’s system.
However, in De Bruyne’s opinion, Erling Haaland has gone unnoticed, despite having scored 52 goals in his debut season and 38 this campaign.
“The season he had last year and the numbers were incredible and ridiculous,” De Bruyne said. “When you have a season where it’s a little less, people don’t appreciate what you’ve done.
Kevin De Bruyne believes Erling Haaland’s achievements this season have been overlooked
The Norwegian gave City victory on Tuesday night with a double against Tottenham.

“But now he has 27 goals and will probably win the Golden Boot again.” Is incredible. He is back to being amazing and will always do what he does.
“For Player of the Season, if I look at our team, I would say Phil or Rodri, because of their importance. There are also some really good players in other teams: at Arsenal there have been a few, and Ollie Watkins has been incredible for Aston Villa “.
Haaland extended his lead in the Golden Boot race with a run against Tottenham on Tuesday night. His impressive numbers this season came despite missing two months due to injury.
City host West Ham at the Etihad on Sunday, while Arsenal host Everton at the Emirates.
De Bruyne believes City deserve respect for being on the brink of an unprecedented fourth consecutive title. Guardiola’s reigning champions have a two-point lead over the Gunners heading into this weekend’s final round of matches.
“You have to value what you do throughout the year to be in this situation.” He added.
“People always talk about trophies, but we worked for 11 months to get to this situation and if you don’t enjoy it along the way, what does it really mean?” That game, whether we win or not, is not going to change how well we did this season.
“I know there’s a lot of talk afterwards, but the way I look at it is that this team has done incredible after the successes we’ve had in recent years. It’s a credit to the whole team to be in this situation again.”
