Kerry Katona claims she was forced to sell her beloved parrot to make ends meet before finding fame and fortune with Atomic Kitten.

The TV personality, 41, is a household name thanks to her top performances with the popular girl group, but she admits that life was very different during her childhood in Cheshire.

Kerry, who filed for bankruptcy in 2008 after collecting £417,000 in unpaid taxes, moved from one foster home to another due to her mother Sue’s deteriorating mental health and ongoing substance abuse problems.

And she admits that times in her teens were so hard that parrot Alfie was sold so she could raise the money to buy basic sanitary products.

She said The times“When I was 17, we sold my parrot, Alfie, for £20 so I could buy some Tampax.

“I had his performance and paid £50 to dance in a nightclub and I got my period so I needed pads but we didn’t have the money, that was the last we heard from Alfie.”

Kerry previously admitted that she was thinking about committing suicide when she was declared bankrupt in 2008.

The media personality was declared bankrupt after failing to pay £82,000 of a £417,000 tax bill, losing her £1.25 million home in Wilmslow.

Kerry said during Steph’s Packed Lunches on Channel 4 that she felt “worthless” because of her financial problems.

She said, “I wanted to hide. I felt a mug, I was ashamed, I felt stupid, I was ashamed. You feel worthless.’

“It was so terrible that I wanted to kill myself. I understand why when people get into debt, so many people take their lives instead of money. I have been there. I was so close to doing it myself.”

Kerry described how she got into the situation, explaining that she never learned about money growing up.

She said, ‘I never learned about money, I never taught in school, my mother never taught me… I have an accountant and I left it all to them.

“I found out I was going bankrupt the day I went bankrupt. This tax bill was £82,000 which was not for me at the time…. The money was all gone.

“I was completely ripped off and conned, I trusted the wrong people… I was on drugs, I wasn’t in the right mood, I trusted them with my money, so it’s my responsibility too.”
