The 2024 New York City Marathon crowned its winners: Kenyan runner Sheila Chepkirui took home the women’s competition, while Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men’s competition.

In the women’s race, the field eventually came down to Chepkirui and Hellen Obiri, with the two Kenyan women battling it out in the final mile. But Chepkirui overtook Obiri in the final stretch, defeating the defending champion with a time of 2:24:35.

The men’s peloton was reduced little by little in the last kilometers, finally leaving only Nageeye and the Kenyan Evans Chebet with less than two kilometers remaining. In the final sprint, Nageeye, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, overtook Chebet and finished first with a time of 2:07:39.

The top American runners in the two divisions, Sara Vaughn and Conner Mantz, placed sixth.

Early in the morning, Americans Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni took victory in the wheelchair category. Romanchuk, now a three-time winner, finished the race in 1:36:31, while Scaroni posted a time of 1:48:05 for her second victory.

Runners began the race through the five boroughs on Staten Island, crossing the Verzzano-Narrows Bridge to pass through Brooklyn and Queens; The runners then moved into Manhattan, crossed into the Bronx for about a mile, and then finished the race in Central Park.
