A policewoman in her 20s has died after taking her own life in regional Western Australia.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was found dead at her home in Albany, 418 kilometers southeast of the state capital Perth, on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the WA Police Union said it was providing support to the officer’s family, colleagues and friends.

“It is with immense sadness that we mourn today the loss of a member of the blue family,” the union said. ‘A serving police officer died this morning.

“The WA Police Union extends our deepest condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues during this time.”

In a message to all police officers, WA Police Acting Commissioner Kylie Whiteley said the officer’s death was a tragedy.

“Family members and staff of the Greater Southern Police District are in the process of receiving support during this tragic time,” he wrote.

“I ask that you reach out if you need help…be aware of those around you and offer your personal support when needed.”

The young officer’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
