Orlando paid tribute to his fiancée in an emotional performance, welcoming her on stage before accepting her award and performance.
She told the audience: ‘You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson. You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor to every song she writes and music video she creates.
“I know her as a mother, as a partner, who brings that same love and joy to our family. In times when we have needed it most, her music and the extraordinary world she creates have brought a sense of joy and laughter, inspiring generations of people around the world.
“She loves with all her heart and it’s something irresistible. I see it reflected everywhere; in our home, in her love for her work, but especially in her love for her fans. Previous winners of the Video Vanguard Award include David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Pink.
The award comes as Perry prepares to release her upcoming seventh studio album, 143. Her comeback single from the album, “Woman’s World,” failed to chart after its release over the summer. Additionally, she was heavily criticized for collaborating on Woman’s World with Dr. Luke, the music producer accused of sexual assault by Kesha in a lawsuit that was later dismissed. Dr. Luke has consistently denied the allegations.
