But Wednesday got off to a shaky start as the Roar singer appeared nervous in rehearsals when a trick she was practicing appeared to go wrong, prompting her to let out an audible scream, just hours before she was due to take the stage.
The Grammy winner, 39, shared a clip on social media of herself screaming and nearly getting hit in the face by prop butterflies while trying to practice her performance.
She was seen looking terrified and laughing while wearing metallic wings on her shoulders, referencing her 147 era (the title of her upcoming album).
“AAAAGGGHHHHH @vmas TONIGHT AGGGHHHHHHH,” she wrote in the caption, mocking her screams in the clip.
In mid-August it was announced that the I Kissed a Girl singer would perform live at the awards show on Wednesday night.

The award is MTV’s equivalent of a lifetime achievement award and was first given to The Beatles in 1984.
Artists scheduled to perform at the 40th annual MTV VMAs on Wednesday include Chappell Roan, Shawn Mendes, Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and a true pop culture icon,” Bruce Gillmer, chief music content officer for Paramount+ and president of music, music talent, programming and events for Paramount, said in a statement, according to AP.
“With his revolutionary creative vision, he has become a global phenomenon and has taken over the world’s biggest stages,” he added.
Although he has not confirmed which songs from his discography he will perform, Billboard He announced that he will be bringing a ‘career-spanning medley’ to the stage.
And he’s just days away from releasing his highly anticipated seventh studio album, 143.
The album will include some of her previously released singles, Woman’s World and Lifetimes, and is scheduled for release on September 20.
