In December 2023, Katie revealed that she was forced to have her eye stitched to allow it to heal.

Katie told her fellow Loose Women panellists: ‘I had a procedure planned called a tarsorrhaphy, which is a semi-permanent closure of the eye. So, it is an operation that is done in the operating room and the eye is completely or partially sewn.

‘Some people may be familiar with this, they usually see it when someone has some type of corneal disease. And closing your eye provides you with the optimal environment to heal.’

“So I’ve had a lot of eye problems over the last year and a half. I don’t like to keep talking about it because there is always someone who is worse off!’

Katie added: “It’s been quite painful so it’s a huge relief for me to finally have it stitched up because it’s so much more comfortable.”

“It’s not permanent, it’ll probably be a year like this and then I hope I can open it.”

It came after she shared in June that her eye hemorrhaged while filming a documentary.

The television personality explained to The daily star at the time: ‘During filming, unfortunately I was in and out of the hospital because I had an eye problem. She burst and I hemorrhaged.

‘I am already blind in one eye, so any further attack or injury could leave me permanently blind. Security is always key in a prison environment. I know it sounds selfish, but I was worried about my own wounds, which present vulnerabilities.’

Katie continued about her ordeal: ‘It was terrifying. But then I knew I had to put myself in that environment to cover this topic properly.’

The previous month, Katie revealed that she had undergone surgery to repair a defect in her left eye, informing fans that she had undergone a tissue graft.

Sharing a photo of her and her team, she said on Instagram at the time: “Back yesterday with my brilliant team @centreforsightuk.”

She explained: ‘I have had a defect for many months so today I had tissue grafted into my left eye to prevent perforation.

‘I never cease to be amazed at what can be done with the eyes, especially with such extreme injuries. I am a complex patient but my consultant @sherazdaya always has a plan to help me and my eye.

In 2008, at the age of 24, she was the victim of a horrific sulfuric acid attack when a man she had dated for just two weeks raped her and then paid a hitman to attack her.

Katie subsequently lost sight in one eye and has struggled to maintain the health of the other, but she didn’t let that stop her from finishing the project.
